    The Nupe are located at the extreme west of Niger-Benue confluence area of Nigeria. The Nupe kingdom comprised eleven or twelve related groups. These were Benu, Beni Ebe, Gbedeje (Gbedegi), Kusopa, Dibo or Zitako (Gana-Gana by the Hausa), Kyedye (Kede) Ebagi, Batsoi, Kupa, Cekpan and Gwagba. The evolution of the Nupe Kingdom and political system is believed to revolve round Tsoede who, with the assistance of twelve Beni Chiefs, conquered Nku and proclaimed himself Etsu.     The origin of Nupe Kingdom is linked to Tsoede also known as Edeji. He was the hero of the Nupe people as well as the founder of the kingdom. Tsoede united all the Nupe people under his rule and won independence from the Igala in the first half of the 15th century. He was believed to be the son of an Igala prince who resided in Nupe. The prince got married to the daughter of the chief of Nku and the union produced Tsoede. Before Tsoede was born, his father was recalled to Idah to become Atta of Igala.
