SOCIO-POLITICAL ORGANISATION OF THE ANNANG

The Annang are one of the southern part of Nigeria, they are located mainly in Akwa-Ibom State. The Annang occupy eight of the thirty local government areas in Akwa-Ibom State. They were believed to have earlier stayed in Abak and Ikot Ekpene.

The Annang practiced a patriarchal system of social organization. The Ufok represented the house or compound; it was made of members of the same family.

Groups of Ufoks made up of the Ekpuks or extended families. The Ekpuks made up the Idung which is the village. Several villages, in turn, made up the Abie or clan. Men were given the prerogative of power most times. There were several societies and associations called the Urims. The elderly men usually held authority called the Afel song, superintended by the Obong or Abong Ichong (village chief and clan chief).
