The Idoma, are one of the ethnic groups in Nigeria. They are traditionally known to be hunters. The Idoma are found mostly in the western part of Benue State. However, there are other Idoma groups found in Cross-River, Enugu and Nassarawa states. They are neighbours with the Tiv, Jukun, Igede, Igala and Igbo people.
Even though it is difficult to trace the origin of the Idoma people, a very popular story about the origin indicates that they originated from a man called Iduh (father of Idoma) who had seven children. The Idoma people developed Idoma language and history from him. The story further suggests that they share a common ancestor and origin with the Igala people.
The Idoma people are very traditional and cultural, especially with their Ogrinya dance, Okoho soup delicacy and Aje Alekwu festival. The Och’Idoma (king) is the highest traditional power in Idomaland.
Agricultural activities like cultivation of yam, guinea corn, millet, groundnuts, melon and beniseed are also popular. They also engage in local crafts, hunting and trade as major economic activities. For the traditional Idoma man, his success is measured by the size of his farm, yam and grain barns.
