A choroid plexus cyst is a small fluid-filled sac that can be detected in the choroid plexus of the brain during prenatal ultrasound examinations. The presence of a choroid plexus cyst may raise concerns about the possibility of aneuploidy, which refers to an abnormal number of chromosomes in a cell. Aneuploidy can result in conditions such as Trisomy 13, Trisomy 18, Trisomy 21, and 45,X (Turner syndrome). Among these conditions, the detection of a choroid plexus cyst is most frequently associated with Trisomy 18.

Trisomy 18, also known as Edwards syndrome, is a chromosomal disorder characterized by the presence of an extra chromosome 18. Individuals with Trisomy 18 often have multiple congenital anomalies and severe developmental delays. The presence of a choroid plexus cyst in prenatal screening may indicate an increased risk of Trisomy 18.

In contrast, while Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome), Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), and Turner syndrome (45,X) are also associated with chromosomal abnormalities, the detection of a choroid plexus cyst is less commonly linked to these conditions compared to Trisomy 18.

Overall, when a choroid plexus cyst is identified during prenatal ultrasound examinations, healthcare providers may recommend further diagnostic testing to assess the possibility of underlying chromosomal abnormalities such as Trisomy 18.
