Movement Disorder Symptoms

  5. Specific Disorder Classification:
    • Tremor Disorders: Tremors are rhythmic, involuntary movements. Specific tremor disorders include essential tremor, Parkinsonian tremor, and dystonic tremor.
    • Dystonia Disorders: Dystonia involves sustained muscle contractions, causing abnormal postures or repetitive movements. Examples include focal dystonia, generalized dystonia, and task-specific dystonia.
    • Chorea and Athetosis Disorders: These disorders are characterized by involuntary, writhing movements and include Huntington’s disease and Sydenham’s chorea.

Copper builds up in various organs, including the brain, causing movement problems, liver disease, and psychiatric symptoms. Mutations in the ATP7B gene are responsible for Wilson disease.

  • Medications: Copper-chelating agents, such as penicillamine or trientine, are prescribed to bind and eliminate excess copper. Zinc acetate may also be used to block copper absorption from the diet.
  • Dietary Restrictions: Individuals with Wilson’s disease are advised to avoid foods rich in copper, such as shellfish, liver, mushrooms, and chocolate.
  • Regular Monitoring: Regular blood and urine tests are necessary to monitor copper levels and adjust treatment as needed.

3) Primary Dystonia: Primary dystonia refers to a group of movement disorders characterized by sustained muscle contractions, resulting in abnormal postures or repetitive movements. The treatment of primary dystonia focuses on symptom management and may include:
