It refers to a condition in which a woman experiences excessive or prolonged bleeding during her menstrual period, typically resulting in soaking through sanitary pads or tampons within a short period of time (often defined as less than two hours).   • Combined Oral Contraceptives (COCs): COCs containing estrogen and progestin help regulate menstrual cycles, reduce bleeding, and relieve symptoms.
  • Progestins: Progestin-only pills, injections, or intrauterine devices (IUDs) can reduce menstrual bleeding.
  • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists: GnRH agonists temporarily suppress menstruation, providing relief from heavy bleeding.
  • Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS): The LNG-IUS is an intrauterine device that releases progestin, reducing menstrual bleeding.
