CRYSTAL ARTHROPATHY OVERVIEW

The most common types of crystal arthropathy are gout and pseudogout, which are caused by the deposition of uric acid and calcium pyrophosphate crystals, respectively.

Uric acid is a waste product produced by the breakdown of purines, which are naturally occurring substances found in certain foods and cells in the body. When there is an excess of uric acid or the body is unable to eliminate it properly, uric acid crystals can accumulate in the joints, leading to inflammation, swelling, and intense pain. The joint most commonly affected by gout is the base of the big toe, but it can also occur in other joints such as the ankles, knees, wrists, and fingers.
  2. Pseudogout: Pseudogout, also known as calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD), is a condition in which calcium pyrophosphate crystals accumulate in the joints. The exact cause of pseudogout is not fully understood, but it is associated with the aging process and certain medical conditions such as thyroid problems, iron overload, and joint damage. Pseudogout typically affects larger joints such as the knees, wrists, hips, and shoulders. The symptoms include sudden pain, swelling, redness, and limited range of motion in the affected joint.
