Stages of Labor

The baby moves through the birth canal, and the woman actively participates by pushing during contractions to facilitate the baby’s descent.
  3. Stage 3: Delivery of the Baby The third stage of labor commences once the cervix is fully dilated, and it ends with the birth of the baby. During this stage, the woman continues to push with each contraction to facilitate the baby’s passage through the birth canal. Once the baby’s head emerges, the rest of the body usually follows quickly. The baby is then placed on the mother’s abdomen or chest for skin-to-skin contact.
  4. Stage 4: Delivery of the Placenta The fourth stage of labor involves the delivery of the placenta, also known as the afterbirth.   3. Administration of uterotonic medication: To aid in the separation and expulsion of the placenta, a uterotonic medication is routinely administered immediately after the birth of the baby. Oxytocin is the most commonly used medication. It causes the uterus to contract, reducing bleeding and facilitating the delivery of the placenta.

Interpreting a labor partogram involves assessing several key parameters and their graphical representation on the partogram chart. Here are some of the elements typically found on a labor partogram and their interpretation:

  1. Cervical dilation: This is represented by a curve or line on the chart, indicating the extent to which the cervix has opened or dilated. The cervical dilation is measured in centimeters and progresses from 0 cm (closed cervix) to 10 cm (fully dilated cervix). Slow or stalled cervical dilation may indicate a need for intervention or prolonged labor.
  2. Descent of the presenting part: The partogram also records the descent of the baby’s presenting part, typically the head, in relation to the mother’s pelvis. This is shown as a descending curve or line. Adequate descent is necessary for the progress of labor, and a lack of descent may suggest an obstructed labor.
  3. Uterine contractions: The frequency, duration, and strength of uterine contractions are recorded on the partogram. This is usually indicated by a separate graph or chart.
