  • Maturation: Once in the stomach, the larvae develop into adult worms. They grow rapidly and can reach lengths of up to 30 centimeters. The adult worms then move from the stomach to the small intestine, where they attach themselves to the intestinal wall using their mouthparts and feed on the host’s blood and tissue.
  • Reproduction: The adult male and female worms mate in the small intestine. The female produces large quantities of eggs, which are released into the intestinal lumen and subsequently passed out of the body through feces and the life cycle of Ascaris lumbricoides continues as described in the first stage.
  • Environmental development: The eggs need to undergo maturation outside of the human body before they become infectious again. In favorable conditions (moisture and warmth), it takes about two to three weeks for the eggs to develop into an infective stage.
  • Transmission: If proper sanitation measures are not in place, contaminated soil can harbor infective eggs for a long period. When a person comes into contact with this soil, either through direct contact or ingestion of contaminated food or water, the cycle restarts as the eggs are ingested.

This life cycle allows Ascaris lumbricoides to persist in populations with poor sanitation practices, leading to a high prevalence of ascariasis in some regions.
