When dilute trioxonitrate (V) acid, also known as nitric acid, reacts with metals, it does not produce hydrogen gas due to its nature as a strong oxidizing agent. Nitric acid has the ability to easily oxidize metals by removing electrons from them. In this oxidation process, the metal is converted into a salt and water is formed. Since the salt produced does not contain hydrogen, there is no liberation of hydrogen gas during the reaction.

This is due to the high reactivity of nitric acid and its tendency to undergo redox reactions where it itself gets reduced while oxidizing the metal.
