Major types of breast lumps

2) Imaging Studies: a. Mammography: Similar to evaluating a breast mass, mammography is typically performed to assess the breast tissue and look for any associated abnormalities. b. Ultrasound: Ultrasound may be used to assess the breast tissue and detect any underlying masses or other abnormalities.

3) Additional Tests:

  • Ductogram (Galactogram): If the nipple discharge is spontaneous, persistent, and associated with a mass or suspicious imaging findings, a ductogram may be performed. This procedure involves injecting a contrast dye into the affected duct and taking X-rays to evaluate the ductal system for any abnormalities.
  • Cytology or Pathological Examination: If the discharge is bloody or shows concerning features, a sample may be collected for cytological or pathological analysis to determine if there are any abnormal or cancerous cells present.

While fibrocystic breast changes do not increase the risk of breast cancer, they can persist over time and require ongoing management to alleviate symptoms.
  • Fibroadenoma: Fibroadenomas are solid, benign tumors that often appear as smooth, round, and rubbery lumps in the breast. They commonly affect women in their twenties and thirties.   • Adenosis: Adenosis refers to the presence of excess glandular tissue in the breast, leading to an increased number of milk-producing glands.   • Fine needle aspiration (FNA): This procedure involves using a thin needle to extract fluid or cells from the fibroadenoma for analysis. FNA is typically performed if the lump is large, growing rapidly, causing pain, or if there are concerns about its nature. If the FNA confirms the diagnosis of a fibroadenoma, no further treatment may be necessary.
  • Surgical removal: If the fibroadenoma causes persistent symptoms, continues to grow, or if there is uncertainty about the diagnosis, surgical removal may be recommended. The surgical procedure is called a lumpectomy, which involves removing the fibroadenoma while preserving the surrounding breast tissue. In some cases, a small scar may remain after the surgery.

 

2) Fibrocystic disease: Fibrocystic disease, also known as fibrocystic breast changes, refers to a condition characterized by the presence of multiple small, fluid-filled cysts and thickened fibrous tissue in the breasts. Treatment for fibrocystic disease focuses on symptom management and may include:

  • Lifestyle modifications: Some lifestyle changes can help alleviate symptoms. These include wearing a well-fitted, supportive bra, reducing caffeine intake, applying heat or cold packs to the breasts, and taking over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), to reduce breast pain.
  • Hormonal therapy: If symptoms are severe and persistent, hormonal therapy may be prescribed. This can include the use of oral contraceptives (birth control pills) or other medications that regulate hormone levels in the body, such as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs).
  • Drainage of cysts: If a cyst becomes large and painful, it can be drained using a fine needle. This procedure, known as cyst aspiration, involves removing the fluid from the cyst to relieve pain and reduce the size of the cyst.
