INTRODUCTION TO HUMAN ANATOMY

Human anatomy is the scientific study of the structure and organization of the human body. It encompasses various subdivisions that help in understanding the different levels of organization and the specific regions or systems within the body. Here are the main subdivisions of human anatomy:

  • Gross Anatomy: Gross anatomy deals with the study of structures that can be observed without the aid of a microscope. It includes the examination of organs, tissues, and systems on a macroscopic scale.
  • Microscopic Anatomy: Microscopic anatomy, also known as histology, focuses on the study of tissues and cells using a microscope. It involves examining the structure, organization, and function of cells, as well as the different types of tissues found in the body.
  • Developmental Anatomy: Developmental anatomy investigates the changes that occur in the human body from conception to adulthood. It examines the growth, differentiation, and maturation of tissues, organs, and systems during prenatal development and after birth.
  • Regional Anatomy: Regional anatomy involves the study of specific regions or areas of the body, such as the head and neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, limbs, and back. It focuses on understanding the structures and relationships within these regions.
  • Systemic Anatomy: Systemic anatomy focuses on the study of organ systems in the body. It examines the structures and functions of various systems, including the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive, nervous, endocrine, and integumentary systems.

  • Deep: Farther below the surface of the body or an organ.

  • Sagittal Plane: This plane divides the body or an organ into right and left halves. If the plane passes through the midline, it is called the midsagittal plane or median plane.

  • Inferior: Refers to a structure being closer to the feet or lower than another structure.
  • Anterior: Refers to the front or toward the front of the body.
