Introduction

Spinal injuries can be classified as complete or incomplete. A complete spinal injury occurs when there is total loss of sensory and motor function below the level of the injury. In contrast, an incomplete spinal injury allows for some degree of sensory or motor function below the level of the injury.

Spinal injuries can be caused by a variety of factors, including traumatic events such as falls, car accidents, sports injuries, or acts of violence. Non-traumatic causes, such as tumors, infections, or degenerative diseases, can also lead to spinal cord damage.

The consequences of a spinal injury can vary widely. Depending on the level and severity of the injury, individuals may experience paralysis or loss of sensation in the affected areas of the body. The higher up the spinal cord the injury occurs, the greater the potential for widespread impairment. Spinal injuries can have significant physical, sensory, and functional impacts, requiring medical intervention, rehabilitation, and long-term care to manage the associated challenges and optimize the person’s quality of life.

 

Pathology of primary and secondary spinal injury

  • Primary Spinal Injury: Primary spinal injury refers to the initial damage that occurs at the time of impact or trauma. It is typically caused by direct mechanical forces such as compression, distraction, shearing, or laceration of the spinal cord or surrounding structures. The primary injury disrupts the spinal cord’s normal structure and function, leading to immediate damage.
  • Secondary Spinal Injury: Secondary spinal injury refers to the ongoing damage that occurs after the initial primary injury. It develops over time and is caused by a cascade of physiological and biochemical processes triggered by the primary injury. Secondary injury mechanisms include inflammation, ischemia (lack of blood supply), oxidative stress, excitotoxicity, apoptosis (cell death), and edema. X-rays or CT scans are then performed to assess spinal cord compression or other abnormalities.

Electromyography (EMG): EMG measures the electrical activity of muscles and can help determine if there is nerve damage or dysfunction. b.Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS): NCS evaluates the speed and strength of electrical signals as they travel along nerves. It can identify nerve injuries and determine the extent of damage.
