AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT THE FEATURES OF GENERAL ADAPTATION SYNDROME

General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) is a term used to describe the body’s response to stress. It was first described by Hans Selye, a pioneering endocrinologist, who identified three distinct stages that the body goes through when faced with stress: the alarm reaction stage, the stage of resistance, and the stage of exhaustion.

  1. Alarm Reaction Stage: This is the initial phase of the body’s response to stress. When an individual encounters a stressor, the body activates its “fight or flight” response, leading to an increase in adrenaline and other stress hormones. Physiological changes such as increased heart rate, rapid breathing, and heightened alertness occur during this stage.
  2. Stage of Resistance: If the stressor persists, the body enters the stage of resistance. During this phase, the body attempts to adapt to the ongoing stressor. Hormone levels may remain elevated, and the body continues to cope with the stressor. However, if the stressor is prolonged, it can lead to negative health consequences.
  3. Stage of Exhaustion: In this final stage of GAS, the body’s resources become depleted due to prolonged exposure to stress. The body’s ability to cope diminishes, and individuals may experience physical and emotional exhaustion. Chronic stress can lead to various health issues such as burnout, depression, anxiety disorders, and weakened immune function.

It is important to note that while GAS provides a framework for understanding the body’s response to stress, individual responses may vary based on factors such as genetics, environment, and overall health.
