  3. Maintaining Airway Hydration: Ciliary movement also aids in maintaining proper moisture levels in the airways. This is essential for efficient gas exchange in the lungs.

Importance of Mucus

Mucus serves several critical functions within the respiratory system:

  1. Trapping and Removal of Particles: When inhaled, airborne particles such as dust, bacteria, and viruses get trapped in the mucus layer covering the airway surfaces. This prevents these harmful substances from reaching deeper into the lungs.
